The work environment for a nursing assistant is not necessarily a hospital setting. Some CNAs work in the homes of patients. The CNA job encompasses a range of responsibilities and duties so no single day should feel boring and routine.

All nursing assistants must be capable of providing empathic nursing care and have the patient’s best interest in mind as CNAs may have day to day contact with a variety of patients from a variety of backgrounds so cultural sensitivity is important as well as being compassionate which is an essential nursing quality as a lot of patients are vulnerable, lonely and depressed.

It is vital that nursing assistants demonstrate professionalism in the performance of job tasks at all times which helps to build up trust between nursing staff and the patients.

Whilst the CNA duties will vary from state to state they can include the following:

Checking vital signs such as recording a patient’s temperature; taking a patient’s blood pressure and measuring a patient’s weight.

Bed making and cleanliness- Changing bed linens and ensuring bed sheets and pillow cases are clean and ensuring the patient’s area is clean and tidy.

Mobilisation- Assisting patients in walking to improve mobility, or transporting them on wheelchair or otherwise

Feeding patients- Following the correct procedure in feeding and assisting patients with their meals.

Assisting in the prevention of bedsores- Identifying at-risk individuals so preventive measures can be implemented to prevent bedsores.

These are just a few of the CNA duties that you may be asked to do on a day to day basis as you will not only be assisting patients maintain their daily routine but you will be required to do other tasks aswell such as carrying out administrative work for doctors or nurses, how much of this is delegated will depend on the job role itself.

After successful completion of CNA training students wishing to become a fully certified nursing assistant will have to pass the NNAAP exam. This is the last and most crucial stage of CNA certification which upon completion will give you a CNA license. For those who are unfamiliar NNAAP stands for National Nursing Aids Assessment Program.

The NNAAP (at present) is the biggest nursing aide certification examination program in the United States and has been administered to more than one million candidates. The exam consists of two components (oral and written)

The CNA examination is offered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and is no different to any other exam in terms of sequence and structure. As with any written exam the purpose is to make a final review and assess your nursing knowledge and skills. It is vital you adopt a good exam strategy before sitting for the CNA test.

Repetition is a commonly used strategy by students who are hoping for exam success. It is not necessarily the most effective if used only on its own but is very helpful as part of a study plan that includes learning and understanding the material. Through repetition also known as “cramming” one can put to paper what has been learnt.

There are many individualised learning styles. Finding out which one works best for you will help you to learn more effectively. There are a wide range of topics covered in the CNA training course so it is important you are well versed on the topics covered, this can include, how to prevent and deal with pressure sores, personal hygiene and cleanliness, feeding patients, Restorative Care, etc…

There are different routes into a career in nursing. Studying online is one of them, although at the moment this is not the most conventional form of study it is becoming increasingly popular as it offers individuals the opportunity to learn at their own pace.

In our contemporary world of high-paced living, obtaining news from the internet is becoming the norm. The learning resources now available makes online study an attractive choice for many students wishing to embark on a CNA course and begin CNA training online rather than attend CNA classes.

Online CNA training is particularly suitable for working parents or busy aspiring nursing assistants who have other commitments but would like to advance their qualifications/career.

Usually online CNA programs are cheaper then when what you would pay in a college or university but you may need to look around to get the best deal. The reduction in cost is not reflective of the quality (there are a number of reasons why online courses are cheaper) Online materials tend to be in digital format and there is not as much one to one interaction which invariably cuts down on the costs.

Many aspiring nursing assistants may also be working full time and wish to study at a pace suitable for them. Attending a classroom and trying to concentrate can prove difficult if you are tired. With CNA training online the materials will be sent electronically, so you can choose to read and study them when you feel alert (whatever time of the day this may be)

There are also no tiring journeys to and from CNA classes to worry about, freeing up more time to study. What will be covered in an online CNA course? Whilst the materials may vary slightly to what you would get in a classroom (it may even be almost identical) you will learn the best practices for a variety of patient care tasks, this includes and is not limited to measuring blood pressure, learning the correct procedure to lift and move patient etc

Whilst you may save on the costs and enjoy the convenience of studying from home you will not get the same level of clinical practice that you might get in a classroom, however you will be encouraged to work in a local hospital to get this hands on experience so this should not be too disadvantageous.

Working as a CNA is an ideal job position for someone who enjoys taking care of other people. The healthcare sector is teeming with energy and opportunity.

Unlike doctors who require much more training then in any other job, the length and nature of CNA training is a lot easier to handle and the staff training and development is manageable. If the idea of slogging away at paperwork for hours is off putting rest assured this does not last too long.

Many who are embarking on a CNA course find the experience life changing as they are able to identify their strengths and weaknesses and decide whether nursing is the right career path for them.

The following routes will give you insight into the various CNA programs you can try as there are many different routes to qualifying and gaining a CNA credential.

Colleges as well as universities offer certified nursing assistant programs. One of the advantages of studying here is that there is the potential to study at a higher level as there are many nursing programs and advanced certified nursing degrees available; aside from studying many students find college/university life fun and rewarding.

If you prefer to study at your own pace on your own there are online programs that are easily accessible. The advantage of these online programs is there is very little interaction and so there are fewer disturbances which may speed up the learning process. There is also no travelling time involved (assuming the student has at home internet access) so less time is wasted.

Online programs also tend to be affordable and flexible so if students are parents who have jobs or other commitments an online CNA program may be a better option than attending CNA classes which can be time consuming and inconvenient.

As a certified nursing assistant you will owe a high duty of care to your patients as you will be working one-one with many patients.

The duties will vary slightly depending on the typical work day schedule but usually include

answering calls from patients and attending to their needs, pushing patients on wheelchairs, repositioning bedfast patients to prevent bedsores, changing bed sheets, running errands for patients and offering personal care and a variety of other tasks as required.

Once a high level of competence has been demonstrated there may be an opportunity for a promotion where tasks delegated will involve a similar level to that of a nurse such as preparing the patient for surgical procedures.

As a certified nursing assistant personal hygiene is very important as an essential duty of a nursing assistant involves looking after and assisting in the personal hygiene of patients. With regards to changing bed linens, good housekeeping practices are necessary to ensure a safe and healthy environment for patients.

A CNA will usually be working under the guidance of an experience nurse or healthcare professional. Aside from these duties the working week may be 37.5-hour week or on a shift basis depending on whether the working week is on a full or part time.

Other duties of a nursing assistant may include feeding patients and making a note of food and fluid intake.

Once a certain number of hours have been worked by the nursing assistant and the necessary examinations have been passed along with other requirements such as demonstrating a level of competence the CNA credential can be gained. The door is then open to other roles, such as- if one chooses working as a psychiatric nursing assistant at a mental health faculty working under the supervision of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses.

In addition nursing assistants are expected to be flexible in undertaking certain tasks as some jobs are less then desirable such as taking care of the patient’s toileting needs but this may be an essential job function as part of providing care to patients and certified nursing assistants are expected to be willing and enthusiastic.

Choosing your future career is probably the biggest decision you will make in your lifetime. As a certified nursing assistant you will be working under the supervision of a registered experienced nurse and will come into contact with people from all walks of life so effective interpersonal skills are important.

There are different factors that can motivate career choices; as working as a CNA involves performing basic patient care being motivated and enthusiastic not only helps patients feel secure and stable but will also help you to find the job emotionally rewarding.

The length of training varies across different states and is dependent on whether you are classroom tutored or choose cna training online. Either way you will need to pass the written examinations and may be required to work late shifts or unsociable hours.

Caring for the most delicate patients may mean additional support is required so a friendly and approachable demeanour is essential.

If you enjoy working with people and like the idea of providing nursing care to patients, it is more likely that you will be suited for a job in nursing, as happy employees whether or not in the medical field are usually productive employees and go on to enjoy a long and fulfilling career.

Whilst extraordinary skills are not necessary to be a cna, the ability to provide excellent care sets a new standard and is an integral part of the job as doctors are not always around to be able to attend to the patient’s needs. Although cnas cannot diagnose or treat a patient the same way in which a doctor or experienced nurse can the support and work carried out by a certified nursing assistant is invaluable.

Nursing Assistants work in many varied environments ranging from hospitals, health centres and even working at the personal home of the patient. Certified nursing assistants implement personal care and carry out basic needs that the patient may have.

Nursing assistants work under and directly report to the nurse supplying vital information by observing the patient’s condition but at the same time do not have the responsibilities that a qualified nurse will have.

Typical duties of a certified nursing assistant include and are not limited to feeding and serving patients, reporting back to the nurse, turning residents on the bed, monitoring blood pressure, pulse and temperature.

Although no previous healthcare experience is required to become a nursing assistant , it is preferred to have experience and have CNA certification which will set you apart from other candidates applying.

A job as a certified nursing assistant may not offer a big salary but is chosen as the career path for many individuals as it can be a very rewarding job helping and supporting vulnerable people who would otherwise be neglected.

Many individuals choose to become a nursing assistant because they enjoy helping people and they find it gives them meaning in their job. However to some a job is there just to pay the bills. The effects of unmotivated behaviour can be felt by patients.

Due to legal liability a CNA will not be able to perform certain tasks, in many cases CNA will provide another set of eyes for the licensed nurse.

The role of certified nursing assistant requires good interpersonal skills, and someone who likes to work in a fast paced environment as this may sometimes be required.

You may also be required to submit to a criminal records check aswell as a drug test. This is usually the case for staff working in healthcare.

Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant can be very rewarding and fulfilling, and lead to a increased opportunities in the health care profession, we hope you make the right decision!

Our CNA Training site aims to provide information and resources for those interested in embarking on a course which preparing you for the role of Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA certification.

Here you will find information on free CNA classes online, CNA training including the Red Cross CNA class, information about CNA jobs including average CNA salary, as well as other resources to help you become a Nurse Assistant and acquire CNA certification.

CNA Certification is ideal for anyone looking to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. There are excellent opportunities for qualified nurses and you will not need a truck full of money to pay for training unlike many other careers in the medical field that can be quite costly routes to go down.

Being CNA certified will offer patients comfort in knowing they will benefit from your expertise and experience in the nursing field. You will also feel confident in yourself as CNA training will mean you have to undergo rigorous practice and meet CNA requirements.

A career in nursing may bring you much satisfaction and happiness as this is a job that involves offering support and care to vulnerable members of our society. By being selflessly motivated you will discover this is the right career path and can look forward to a long fulfilling career.

Job prospects in this field are said to be good as employers in this industry are able to make effective use of the skills that nurses have.

To become a certified nursing assistant CNA training is required, but keep in mind that the training requirement vary slightly from state to state so make sure to do your reach first.

More often than not students will have work in a health care centre for a specified period of time where they will undergo free training in exchange for unpaid work, but sometimes CNA training is available at various schools where a fee will be charged (usually). Whilst there may be a charge the advantage is that the student is not under any contract of hire and therefore be able to choose freely where to work once they have undergone CNA training.
